Observing (noticing) and questioning (wondering) are simple, powerful habits that enrich every aspect of math instruction. When we ask students to notice and wonder, we shift the focus from teacher driven explanations to student-centered ideas. Noticing and Wondering can be utilized with word problems as well as pictures. Consider removing the questions in your word problems so that your students have time to observe and wonder prior to solving a question.
