Do several with the students to model good testing strategies.
· Read more than once.
· Give the thinking path or explanation when asked.
· Complete all steps of the question.
· Go back to check that all parts of the question have been completed.
Use a question for an entire week.
· Day 1: Read the stem and do a Notice & Wonder
· Day 2: Complete Step A
· Day 3: Complete Step B
· Day 4: Complete Step C
· Day 5: Look at incomplete and incorrect answer samples. Ask students how to make the answer receive the highest score point
Practice all the steps for calculator use.
· Record steps as equations are put in the calculator.
· The steps can be listed on separate lines in the response.
· Do the calculations at least twice because it’s easy to make a mistake on the calculator.
Give students incomplete responses and ask them to complete the task.
Ask students to tell the class what they must do in the task.
Show sample responses and ask students to score the response.
Reinforce the meaning and practice of a thinking path.
Make sure students are proficient with the modeling expectations in your grade level.
Give students opportunities to explain the thinking paths of others for a correct response.
Give students opportunities to explain errors in the thinking paths of others and solve for the correct answer.
Have students identify missing information needed to solve the problem.
